Meta-Vanity

I use free service StatCounter to see whether people are reading this blog or not. Turns out I get about a hundred visitors a day. Howdy! One of my favorite features of the StatCounter report is the 'Came From' page, which gives me links to the page people were at when they surfed over to here. I get hits from the oddest places sometimes. Almost everyday I get a hit or two from people looking for a picture that I linked to once many moons ago. (The Evil DM said he wanted more T-n-A in this blog. There ya go, man!) And the link from the Wikipedia entry on Wraeththu gets me a steady trickle of visitors. Come for the flower penises, stay for the grown man blogging about 30-sided dice! Yesterday I learned that my piece on the art of David Deitrick is the first item that google kicks back if you search for the words "alien encounter shrine". That's pretty cool and utterly silly. Hopefully whoever was looking for that shrine eventually found it. I also discovered recently that I'm listed among the gaming links of an intense looking Finnish dude named Sampo. I very much like the spartan layout of that guy's website.

Wow.. really.. um.. a hundred a day?

That surprises me. You post regularly and your entries are really good, yet you get less than one-tenth what I get for readers in a day. Of course, I'm more controversial, and controversy sells.

I get, on any given day, readers from all over the US and Great Britain, tons from Canada, a decent amount from Uruguay, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Belgium, the Ukraine, Finland, the Philippines, Germany, China (I'm guessing that's Erick Wujcik, mostly), France, Russia, Malaysia, Australia, India, and even the Republic of Korea.

Curiously, I've never had any known nazi lesbian hookers surfing to my site from a nazi-lesbian hooker site, or any other such thing. Mostly, they come to read me from either other blogs, or gaming fora, or google search. Ah well, you can't have everything.

  2. "I'm more controversial, and controversy sells."

In Howard Stern's comedy biopic Private Parts there's this scene where some guy at the radio station explaims that Stern has a huge segment of his regular audience that hate his guts. They tune in to get outraged at whatever he is going to say next. I think you've got some of that mojo going.

Then there's the fact that I don't spend a lot of my time ragging on some of the hobby's more self-important personalities. That's got to draw some people just for the shock, the "Oh, no, he didn't!" factor. That's one of the reasons I love your blog, but it's not what I do here.

  3. I get about 20 hits a day from other game blogs, including yours. the other 80 hits are from search engines looking for pictures of Tera Patrick and Elle Chidzey.
I dont really post the deeper RPG articles and diatribes. Rather than controversy I go for "cheesecake", sex sells baby. the tough part is finding pics that are provocative yet still safe for the guys to view from work. My blog is more of a Maxim or FHM for gamers.

Have you noticed that the Suicide Girls image and your blog post are the #1 hit on a Google image search for "penny arcade"?

That's how I got here. Nice site, by the way. Came for the porn, stayed for the RPG related meanderings.
